Description

The play takes place in the drawing room of the Winslow's London home over two years in the years preceding World War One. The Winslow family comprises father Arthur, mother Grace, daughter Catherine, sons Dickie and Ronnie. Violet is the household maid. The older son Dickie attends Oxford and is pursuing an active social life. Daughter Catherine is engaged to John Watherstone, but is also an active suffragette with her own political views.

Father Arthur is a retired bank executive and is in ailing health. The play opens with the unexpected arrival home of Ronnie, 14, from naval school. Ronnie reveals that he was expelled from naval school accused of stealing a five-shilling postal order. Arthur believes his son and vows to fight the expulsion. However, the family encounters legal obstacles. The Navy is a royal institution and therefore to challenge the government is challenging the Crown. Only the Crown can allow a legal challenge to itself. The family is unsuccessful with the help of their lawyer Desmond Curry. Catherine suggests they hire a very prominent and successful barrister Sir Robert Morton. Sir Robert agrees to interview Ronnie and subjects him to a vigorous cross-examination. Yet, Sir Robert believes his story and agrees to take the case.

The Crown still resists, so Sir Robert takes the case to the House of Commons. Meanwhile the family begins to experience hardship from the case. The public and press vilify them for being disloyal when there is a threat of war. Though comfortable, the family has no great fortune and all the money is going for legal costs. Dickie has to withdraw from Oxford and take a job at a bank. Catherine's fiancé gets pressure from his family and eventually ends their engagement. Arthur's health deteriorates further. Finally, the debate in the House of Commons prompts the Crown to accept the case and it is tried. During this period, a newfound respect and affection grows between Catherine and Sir Robert.

Desmond Curry admits his affection for Catherine and proposes to her. Sir Robert is offered a very prestigious and important appointment that he turns down. The Winslows await the verdict.
